• Years ago - art deco manicure

    Hi everyone,

I'd been thinking about a theme for the letter Y for days but the only thing I could come up with was Yellow and I was so not in the mood for yellow. So I kept on thinking and the end of the week kept coming closer and closer... and I still wasn't in the mood for yellow! When I was just about to give up on the Y my priceless husband decided to just read a list of english scrabble words that start with a y and while I knew most of them, I never heard of the word 'yesteryear'. It turns out it means 'last year' or 'not too long ago'. The cogs in my head started turning and I decided to go with 'years ago' and an art deco theme. Of course art deco is from the 1920s so it's definitely not of yesteryear, but it IS from years ago (about 90 to be exact ;)

I've always loved the straight, geometric look of art deco and, living in a house that was built between 1920 and 1930, we have some gorgeous art deco stained glass in the separating doors between our living room and our study (which is actually one of the things I love most about this place). So I searched through my plates for an image to stamp. I'd already decided I wanted to stamp with gold on a very dark color (Great Gatsby movie poster anyone?). Everything combined looks like this:

    indoors, no flash

I chose the darkest brown I had, OPI Shh... It's Top Secret! to paint two thin coats on all my nails. It covers pretty good so I want to try and stamp with it one day.

When that had dried I chose a pretty gold that has a slight duochrome effect in the bottle but not on my nails: Colour Alike LE Galaxy Supernova. I stamped an image from MoYou Time Traveller Back to the 20s 05 and to my surprise the main part fitted my nails like it was custom made for this length so I decided to add nothing else and just leave my nails as they were, except of course for a coat of Seche Vite :)

The polishes I used (and you can see the duochrome effect of Supernova in this picture):

I like the stamp on my nails. I think it looks a little like a stylized scarab and of course in the 1920s Egyptology was a big hype so that's another connection to my theme. But I have to admit I grew tired of my dark nails quickly so this wasn't a manicure I wore for a long time.

It took me ages to type up the post though as December has started and apart from the usual holidays there are a ridiculous amount of birthdays crammed in that month, all of the "I really have to show up" kind (you know what I mean, right? Mother-in-law, husband, sister, niece, and way way more). So I had to do some shopping (read: a lot!!) in advance because of course you have to give the perfect gift, I had to visit the hairdresser to make sure I don't look like a bird's nest exploded on top of my head, and then my manager told me I had to pass an exam by December 15th so I've been studying like crazy to try and remember everything. On the other hand, I'm grateful all those celebrating people are still around for me to celebrate with them and I'm grateful for having a job that pays for all the gifts, the hairdresser and the occasional nail polish when so many people are struggling to make ends meet. So I guess I shouldn't complain too much about my *tries to find an english translation of the dutch term "luxe probleem" but can't find it*

Anyway, I managed to get this post typed up in time to add it to the InLinkz for the letter Y so it can be shown with all the other manicures, so that is one item off of my to do list ;)
